Martingale strategy was an extremely popular gambling
strategy in France. In a simple gambling setting, the probability or odds of

Since one win is enough to account for all the previous losses, Martingale
strategy is hugely popular.

The Martingale betting system has been used by gamblers historically
in the game of roulette as well. After every loss, the gambler doubles his bet
in anticipation that the next bet would be a winner and would be big enough to
recover all the previous losses. This also ensures a small profit. For
instance, in the fist bet, the gambler bets $10 and loses. As per Martingale
system, he is now supposed to bet $20. In case of a further loss, he increases
his bet to $40. Let us assume that he wins this time. So he has made $40 and
lost $30 in his 3 successive bets. This has been a popular strategy of the rich
in many of the gambling games. This has also caused a lot of damage to gamblers
and turned them into degenerate gamblers.

Mathematically, Martingale strategy works if the sequence of
bets is continued till infinity and this works for a person who is able to bet
infinitely. The major flaw of the method is that even mathematically, each
gamble is an independent event unaffected by the previous gambles. The
martingale strategy might seem to work in most situations. However, there can
be a time when the gambler might be unable to bet anymore after a certain loss.
For instance a rich gambler with a net worth of $10 million might be able to
tolerate a loss of $1 million. When the loss exceeds a certain amount, the
gambler usually stops gambling. The strategies such as Martingale have been a
boon to many casinos. Even in games where the house doesn't have an advantage,
the emotional actions such as Martingale betting have given house a tremendous
advantage. There are variations of Martingale strategy in Roulette gambling.
Some strategies such as the Labouchère system don't require the gambler to
double the size of bets after every loss.
